I bought the S85 based BMW M5 with the terrible V10 Engine and SMG Transmission with 160,000 miles. The auction listed it with NO Mechanical damage. Upon first startup I heard an interesting noise, which I would definitely consider some sort of mechanical damage so I took it to Eurocharged Orlando to get it diagnosed. Here's what they said...

Have you heard about the parable of the man who spent every penny he made and even went into severe crippling debt buying and keeping up with the maintenance of his e60 m5? Yes he worked 70 hours weeks in a hot factory breaking down his body day by day like a whip with pounding sounds of forklift beeps repetitively embedded into his head. All to keep up paying for the car at the end of the week he had nothing. Even had to spend 20$ a week on food because that’s all he could afford food also never bought a house couldn’t afford that had to sleep in the m5. What a life he lived. I could tell you even more

Sort of makes me think twice about the quality of BMW and Mercedes. You don’t get what you pay for. My girlfriend has a beautiful 2009 Mercedes SL 550 with 21k miles she bought last summer. Well wouldn’t you know it the engine mounts are leaking and it has an oil leek. They aren’t worth the money mechanically.

Very, very fragile car but lets face it, they only get so bad because owners don't know what they are getting into when they buy them cheap as used cars. They aren't meant to be used daily and maintained infrequently. I've always liked these cars even though it took many years for the styling to grow on me. Saw one on a rolling road at a BMW show a few years ago and the sound was immense.

My 2006 M5 had a oil pump failure that sends oil to the Vanos, long story short, oil was full of metal and BMW wanted $24,500 to basically rebuild the entire engine. My expensive warranty that I purchased thru the dealer (metrolina auto group) refused to cover the repairs. I could not cover that cost, so metrolina took the car back and found me an E92 M3 with over 100k miles to replace it. In hind sight, that M5 was amazing and so much fun to drive, I regret trading it, and should have found a way to rebuild or replace that engine with a dinan. With an after market exhaust and top speed limiter delete, it was like driving a heavier and more comfortable F1 car. I know this is tmi of my story, but that car could definitely be saved.

I dont usually comment on posts, but this one I couldn't not say anything. In 2015 I bought a 2007 m6 for 40k. I bought it at carmax with their warranty. 5 years or 100k miles. There is a third way to expire the warranty. Exceed the value spent on the car. Yes I had $40000 of repairs in 4 years. The last was a used motor and I still had to pay 7000 out of pocket . I traded It in for a m4.

I used to have a 335D (by the way, if you have one and it's running properly, sell it right now) and it was constantly throwing misfire codes. After a few thousand in repairs over a year or so and a few thousand more coming up (suggested replace all injectors), I cut my losses. Fun to drive but my new rule is only own BMW now with a warranty in place!

I considered buying one until 2 of my customers bought them and practically lived at the shop and they were very clean well serviced cars, if you go into the purchase knowing that it’s a black hole for money and seriously high maintenance car then carry on. I had one sound like that and it was the vanos oil feed line in the sump starving the units and it spun a shell because the customer decided doing 190 was a good idea sounding like it did

I call BS on your Carly thing, very generic. Funny, you say it goes straight to BMW's code numbers, yet it showed an M3. High pressure vanos line is why the half throttle...listen, you get what you pay for. Many of these cars were ran hard, abused, then sold with hardly any maintenance done to them..Hell most don't know how to properly warm it up before running it hard...anyway, I have had two of these, still have the second, never a serious issue with either. Promise you, at 50/60 mph on, not much can stay with it
